Blankets to the Streers exists to help people survive. That means we typically give gifts that meet necessities, but sometimes (honestly, all the time) we wish we could do more.
I had been looking for a guitar for a client for a while. He’s a veteran, an artist and has become a friend. After reaching out to different programs that supply vets with musical instruments, I found none that did so for our homeless vets. Most came with prohibitive requirements, such as attending lessons for a certain number of days, often in a place that a vet without wheels cannot reach. So, after months of searching, I thought perhaps I should give up or just save up personal funds to buy one.
Much to my surprise, I was notified that I won one in a contest, which I entered before I began looking for a guitar for this person. I knew it was meant for him and on the day I was going to drop it off, his girlfriend and I schemed to surprise him. Instead of just the normal wood and hand warmers for keeping warm, something special was under the tarp.
I opted not to film him, but his girlfriend wanted to preserve the moment and so we get to share it, here. Finally, after YEARS of waiting, he geta his guitar. This was truly one of the best days I’ve ever had. 🙂
