To Give & Give Thanks

Updated: Nov 25, 2021

Thanksgiving is here and tomorrow is Native American Heritage Day. Both offer us a lot of food for thought and (hopefully) the time to take stock of where we’ve been and where we’re hoping to go, personally and as a culture.

The last two years have been challenging to put it very lightly. We have a lost a lot, gained a bit, and are still in a time of trying to process everything. Times of change and uncertainty can make it more difficult to muster up feelings of thankfulness. This is not news to any unhoused person, but it may be one of the first times that such a large portion of the population can better understand what it is to live a life of uncertainty or to have a need of not just our normal self reliance, but community in order to survive. And, survive we must, before we can thrive. Which is why Blankets to the Street exists. We have to be well enough, healthy enough to walk through open doors of opportunity, and sometimes we need a bit of help getting there.

Today, I’m grateful for Blankets to the Streets’ donors and volunteers, both of whom allow us to connect with those who need assistance. I’m grateful for the recipients who are brave enough to reach out. I constantly learn from and am inspired by the people I meet, whether through email correspondence or while out on the streets.

Whether you celebrate or not, I hope that this Thanskgiving and Heritage Day bring steps towards much needed change and through it all, comfort. Sending love to all of our Blanket family!
